- Genna or Gannā - Christmas in Ethiopia is called Genna, which comes from the ancient Greek
word jevva, meaning "nativity." Genna is also the name of a popular hockey-like game that is played on this holiday. Because Ethiopia uses the Julian calendar, Christmas is celebrated
on January 7, as it is in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Julian calendar is thirteen days behind the Gregorian calendar. Epiphany, called Timqat, is celebrated on January 19 and is, by far, the
