In what is now known as the year 1, an angel appeared to some shepherds keeping night watch over their flocks.  As the glory of the Lord shone around them, they became very afraid.  The angel said to them, "You have nothing to fear!  I come to proclaim good news to you - tidings of great joy to be shared by the whole people.  This day in David's city a savior has been born to you, the Messiah and Lord.  Let this be a sign to you:  in a manger you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes."  Suddenly many more angels appeared, saying, "Glory to God in high heaven, peace on earth to those on whom his favor rests."  Bible, Luke 2:6-14

Traditionally, Christmas is a Christian festival honoring the birth of that Savior, Jesus of Nazareth.  This is not a typical birthday party, and it is celebrated in many different ways worldwide.  In most of the world, Christmas occurs on December 25.  The Eastern Orthodox Church observes Christmas day in January, and combines it with  Theophany (a manifestation of divinity) in recognition of the divinity of Jesus.  Allegedly, December 25th was the date chosen in order to counteract the many ancient pagan and non-Christian holidays occurring at that time (Saturnalia, Yule, winter solstice rites).

The Feast of the Nativity (birth), dating back to the 4th century, adopted many of those pagan traditions, including lights, mistletoe, decorated trees, gift-giving, holly and ivy.   Since the current commercialized "holiday season" in the USA now extends from November 1st to January 1st (two months!), see also Thanksgiving for holiday related events and recipes.  Also, many of these categories overlap, but we've tried to limit duplication in links.
