Carnaval probably began as a pagan celebration in ancient Rome. Today it is celebrated over several days of events with lavish street parades, extravagant costumes, Latin music and great fun everywhere.  Traditional pre-Lent carnivals begin around January 17th and end on Ash Wednesday.  Because it starts exactly 40 days before Lent, the dates change every year.

spotlight on:  Carnaval (Portuguese spelling) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during Carnival Week, February 24 – 28, 2006. Join international and local revelers, visit Rio’s amazing sites (Corcovado, Sugar Loaf Mountain), and perhaps attend the exclusive invitation-only Grand Copacabana Ball with visiting celebrities from around the globe.  This 4-day celebration starts on a Saturday at the peak of summer, when Cariocas are at their best, and ends on Fat Tuesday.  In the late nineteenth century, Brazil began having carnival balls (parties) like the Italians.  In the 1930s they added a Samba parade, which by 1984 had grown so popular that it got a permanent home -- the Sambodrome.  Outside the Sambodrome, a street carnival is happening all over the city.  Banda de Ipanema is one of the most traditional gatherings.

Exotique Expeditions, in conjunction with Parties Without Borders (based in Toronto, ON, Canada), is making the trip possible for you to join with other travelers if you don't want to go alone!

Panama

  •  Panama's carnival big party celebration in Panama City is the second largest in the world; officially begins the fourth day before Ash Wednesday and many celebrations begin earlier. On the actual Carnival days, most work comes to a complete stop and the main streets are filled with parades, floats ,masks, costumes and confetti
  •  Carnival in Las Tablas, a provincial town about l30 miles west of Panama City, is considered by many the best place to celebrate Carnival. The atmosphere is more folkloric and enlivened by an intense, traditional rivalry between "high street" and "low street" for the fanciest costumes and most creative floats
  •  Friday everything begins with the selection the Carnival Queen and her attendants.  Cuban Week at the El Panama Hotel, Dominican Republic week at the Caesar Park Hotel and Puerto Rican Week at the Riande Continental Hotel.
Saturday, Vía Espana, the main street of Panama City, fills with people intent on partying . There is a small parade, music blasts everywhere, (mostly salsa, typical Panamanian and Afro-Cuban) and street vendors abound
  •  One Panamanian Carnival tradition is "mojaderas" or "getting drenched" in water. Anyone becomes a target to the many fire hoses, water balloons and buckets. Sunday at midday there is a large, beautiful "pollera" parade. Polleras are Panama's national costume for women.  Monday has more of the same with a small parade and the streets filled with revelers
  •  Fat Tuesday is the biggest Carnival celebration day. A huge New Orleans-style parade with highly decorated floats and costumed people from all sectors of society. The party finishes in the early hours of the morning
