Cead Mile Failte (One Hundred Thousand Welcomes).  St. Patrick’s Day is the national holiday of Ireland and also a Christian holiday.  St. Patrick was born in approximately 390 A.D. and given the name Maewyn Succat.  At 16, he was captured by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland.  He experienced an epiphany, and he escaped.  Later he had a vision, and a divine voice told him to return to Ireland to Christianize the people.  He became a priest and changed his name.   The Pope recruited Patrick as a missionary bishop to Ireland, and Patrick converted much of Ireland.  According to legend, he used the shamrock to help teach the concept of the Holy Trinity, and he drove the snakes out of Ireland and into the sea; one snake resisted, but Patrick tricked it into a box and threw the box into the sea.

The first celebration for this saint was a parade in Boston in 1737.  On March 17, 1762, Irish soldiers in the English military brought the first St. Patrick’s Day march to New York City.  Today there are hundreds of parades, everyone wears green (or they get pinched!), and of course there is the green beer.  Some rivers are even dyed green.  Since it is a religious holiday, many attend mass to pray for the world's missionaries.  Until the 1970s, pubs were prohibited from opening.  Today in Ireland, the restaurants and pubs are the only open businesses.  As they say, on St. Patrick’s Day, everyone is Irish; so many links below are to Irish pubs across the globe.  Scroll down for events worldwide.

the holiday

This year St. Patrick’s feast Day has officially been moved to Saturday March 15, 2008 by the Vatican.  The reason is that Easter is very early this year, making March 17 fall on the Monday of Holy Week.  This last happened in 1940.
