Sadie Hawkins Day

Sadie Hawkins Day was invented by comic strip writer Alfred Gerald Caplin a/k/a Al Capp, in his strip "Li'l Abner," on November 13, 1937.  In the strip, unmarried women (including Sadie Hawkins) pursue the men (which just wasn't done in the 1930's!).  The first event in real life was celebrated November 9, 1938, and is now usually celebrated on either November 9 or the first Saturday of November.    It is common for dances to be held, where the girls ask the guys.

The name Sadie Hawkins Day was later associated with St. Bridget and St. Patrick in Ireland (circa 400 A.D.), and is celebrated every four years on February 29.
