New Year's Eve & Day

Although the date for New Year's Day is not the same in every culture, it begins on January 1 for cultures that use a 365-day solar calendar.  January 1 became the beginning of the new year in 46 B.C., when Julius Caesar decided the calendar should put winter during Winter.  The ancient Romans began a tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year's Eve by giving one another branches from sacred trees for good fortune in the coming year.  Later, nuts or coins imprinted with the god Janus became more common New Year's gifts.  In the Middle Ages, Christians changed New Year's Day to December 25 (Christmas), then to March 25 (the Annunciation).  In the sixteenth century, Pope Gregory XIII revised the Julian calendar, and New Year's Day was returned to January 1.

Today in France, families exchange gifts and cards; children often present their parents with homemade gifts.  In Italy, mistletoe is hung over the front door for good luck to the entire house.  In Scotland, people bring cakes and cookies to parties, and it is believed that the first person to enter a house will receive good luck.

spotlight on:   No matter the date, the start of a new year is always a time for celebration and for customs to ensure good luck.  Many people have big parties on New Year's Eve (December 31).  Children are often permitted to stay up until midnight, when "Old Father Time" (with a long white beard) is replaced by the "New Year's Child" (dressed only in diapers).  Later in the day, there will be major parades in Paris, France; Pasadena, California; London, England; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

history

good luck foods to eat New Year's Day

  •  black-eyed peas and other legumes - in the USA and many other cultures
  •  donuts - in Holland (because anything in the shape of a ring symbolizes "coming full circle" or completing a year's cycle)
  •  grapes eaten each time the clock chimes at midnight - in Spain
  •  Mochi (rice cakes) - in Japan
  •  the hog (bacon, ham) and cabbage leaves (representing money) - signs of prosperity

On New Year's Eve, Buddhist temples let 108 passersby ring a huge bell one time, once for each of the 108 kinds of evil.  On New Year's Day, it is traditional to make a pilgrimage to a Shinto shrine or a Buddhist temple.  In Japan, the celebration lasts for three days, starting on January 1; everyone gets new clothes and almost no one works.
