- October 31 is the day set aside in the USA for celebrating Halloween. Trick or treating occurs on Halloween evening, but other events such as haunted houses and pumpkin festivals are open the entire month of October. Since many companies
have their own costume contests for employees, and masquerade parties tend to happen this time of year, shopping for costumes can start as early as mid-September.

|
tips for safe trick-or- treating
|
- Have treats by the door.
- Clear your yard and walkways of debris or junk, remove any obstacles and repair loose steps.
- If you have a pumpkin with a candle, place it where it will not be in a child's way. Consider using a flashlight in the pumpkins instead.
- Replace outdoor light bulbs that have burned out.
- Remind your child to keep an eye out for things in people's yards that they may have forgotten, such as a rake.
- Watch out for other people's pets.
- Remind children not to dart in between cars.
- Check for tampering with candy packages, and don't let your child eat something that is not packaged if it came from someone you do not know.

pet safety
|
Halloween can be stressful and dangerous for your pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) advises:
- Don't leave your pet out in the yard on Halloween. Tricksters can harm your pet.
- Too many strangers can be scary, so dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, be very careful your pet doesn't dart outside.
- Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin; pets may knock it over and cause a fire.
- Candy is not for pets; chocolate is poisonous to many animals, and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed.
- Don't dress the dog or cat in costume unless you know he or she loves it.
- Make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal's movement, hearing or ability to breathe or bark. Also, there should not be small, dangling, or easily chewed-off pieces (choking hazard).
- Be careful not to obstruct your pet's vision. Even the sweetest animal can get snappy when he or she can't see.
- Make sure your pet is wearing proper identification. If they become lost or hurt, you increase the chances that they will be returned to you.
