  •  "Solstice" means "sun stands still."  In late June in the Northern Hemisphere, and in late December in the Southern Hemisphere, the sun appears to stay in one place north or south of the celestial equator (the projection of the Earth's equator onto the sky); it changes little in declination from one day to the next
  •  Solstice refers to either of the two points in the ecliptic at which the sun is farthest from the celestial equator.  We call the solstice north of the celestial equator the "summer solstice" because in June in the northern hemisphere it is hot (summer).  The solstice south of the celestial equator is in December, so we call it the winter solstice -- even though in the southern hemisphere it is hot (summer) in December
  •  It occurs in the northern hemisphere around June 22.  This is the longest day of the year (when the time between sunrise and sunset is greatest, for the year) because the Sun is farthest north.  It marks the first day of the season of Summer in the northern hemisphere and Winter in the southern hemisphere
  •  It could be argued that the last Sunday in October has the longest day, since it has 25 hours in the day (and the first Sunday in April has 23 hours), but Daylight Saving Time does not affect actual daylight hours (around 15 hours on this day)
  •  The Earth is three million miles closer to the sun in January than it is in June, but because the Earth leans slightly on its axis (23 degrees and 27 minutes off the perpendicular to the plane of orbit), being closer doesn't make it hotter
