- Santa Lucia Day (Sweden) - festival of lights honors Saint Lucy in Sweden, whose name means "light." On the old calendar, Saint Lucy's Day fell on the winter solstice -- the shortest
and darkest day of the year! According to legend, the beautiful Lucy was engaged to be married, but in order to save the life of her ailing mother, she pledged to donate all her possessions to
charity and die a virgin so that her mother might live. Her angry fiancee denounced her as Christian to the local authorities, and Lucy was made a martyr, but not before plucking out her eyes and
presenting them to her suitor...who had mentioned that he admired them
