- St. Nicholas Day - better known by his Dutch name of "Santa Clause," he was a Christian
bishop of Myra, a city in Turkey; he is remembered for his acts of charity. In the most famous story about old Saint Nick, he saves three sisters from lives of prostitution by secretly leaving
gifts so that they would have a dowry to marry. According to one version of the story, the gifts landed in stockings that the sisters had hung on the chimney to dry! In many countries, St.
Nicholas' feast day is the day he arrives with presents for children. Celebrated in many European countries including Hungary, people exchange gifts during this time.
