(Please note that Saint Barbara was dropped from the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints in 1970 since the tales of her life and martyrdom are legendary.)

         According to lore, a girl should place a twig from a cherry tree in a glass of water on St. Barbara's Day. If the twig blossoms by Christmas Eve, she is certain to marry in the next year
