- Soldier's day was February23. Allegedly, this was the day when the Soviet Army was created in early '20s. So people congratulate
those who served in the army. This was the idea at least. Now they congratulate all men without distinction.
The proximity to the Women's day is purely coincidental. The Women's day was
originated I believe by Clara Tsetkin, an Austrian revolutionary of the 19th century. To me it seems strange to be congratulated simply because one belongs to one of two sexes. After all, we should respect women every day and not choose one day of the year to show them special respect. Nevertheless, it's a day off.
